Canadiens Rip Islanders For First Win In Regulation This Season

The Montreal Canadiens have gotten off to a slow start this season, and entered Thursday night's game against the New York Islanders having gone thirteen games without a win in regulation dating back to last season. Apparently, all they needed to cure their ails was a team that was struggling more than they are. The Habs jumped on them early scoring three goals in the first two periods en route to a 5-1 victory at the Bell Centre. Montreal improved to 4-5-0 with the victory while the Islanders dropped to 1-4-3.

NHL hockey betting devotees who weren't scared away by the -180 home favorite price tag on Montreal cashed their tickets with the Canadiens' big win. It was the sixth win for the Habs in their last eight meetings with the Islanders. The six goals scored just managed to go OVER the posted total of 5'. The Canadiens went OVER for only the fourth time in nine games, while the Islanders have gone OVER in five of their nine contests.

The struggling Montreal offense finally woke up, helped by a 43-22 shots on goal advantage. When Montreal opened a 2-0 lead in the first period it marked the first time this season that they'd led by more than a goal, a fact that surprised left winger Mike Cammalleri:

"We're making it hard on ourselves. That's something -- I didn't realize that until right now but that makes sense. Every game's been so tight, and it's important to try and win in tight games and find ways to win those games but at the same time you can't do that 82 times a year and then however many games in the playoffs, so it was important to get out to a little bit of a lead and hang on to one tonight."

Montreal goaltender Jaroslav Halek played well in relief of starter Carey Price, but lost his shutout bid when he misplayed a puck just seconds into the final period. Cammalleri described a conversation he had with Halek after the game:

"After the game I went to give him a hug and he said, 'I don't like shutouts. And I said, 'Well, you better like shutouts!' But he played great when we needed him tonight, made some solid saves, and we'll let that one go."

Islanders' coach Scott Gordon admitted that his team's poor play made it easy for the Habs' to dominate:

"We were a pretty easy team to play against. Defensively we were on our heels because of all our turnovers and it wasn't just in one area, it was coming out of our zone, it was situations where we had full control of the puck and we're not making plays. It's probably the worst that I've ever seen it tonight and it's something that we've got to get better at."

Montreal plays their next two games at home, hosting the New York Rangers on Saturday night and welcoming the Islanders back to the Bell Centre for another game next Monday night. They'll then head to Pittsburgh for a game against the defending Stanley Cup Champion Penguins on Wednesday. The Islanders have a Saturday night home game against the Washington Capitals before their return engagement with Montreal. They'll then return home to play their regional rivals the New York Rangers on Wednesday.

Patriots Humble Bucs In London

Sunday's game between the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers was played in an unusual venue, but produced the expected result. In the NFL's third regular season game in London, England the Patriots showed the Wembley Stadium crowd why they're among the league's best as they methodically dismantled the Bucs en route to a 35-7 victory. Oddly, it took a trans-Atlantic trip for the Pats to get their first road win of the season-the Bucs were 'officially' the home team in the contest. New England QB Tom Brady threw for 308 yards and 3 touchdowns, though was picked off twice in the workmanlike victory. Tampa Bay remained winless, slipping to 0-7 while New England improved to 5-2.

The Patriots easily covered the pointspread as -15' 'road' favorites, and improved their record against the number to 4-3 on the season. The Bucs have struggled almost as badly against the NFL pointspread as they have straight up, and slipped to 1-6 versus the money.

Afterwards, Pats' QB Brady said that he's enjoying the trip to England-as well as the victory:

"I'm feeling great. I keep rolling. That's two wins in a row. We went out there and put two touchdowns on the board there in the second half. We had plenty of distractions coming over here, but everybody was really energized. To get the win and fly home and have a bye week off is just great."

NFL football is still a big deal in soccer mad England, and over 80,000 fans jammed the stadium for the game. League commissioner Roger Goodell has stated that he'd like to see multiple regular season games held in London, with a possibility of the city eventually receiving an NFL franchise. Even a superstar like Tom Brady wasn't quite used to the rock star like treatment he received in England:

"All the flashbulbs were going off there before the kickoff. They went on for about 10 minutes, which you don't see in the States too often. I think it's a privilege to come over here and get to enjoy this type of experience. It will probably never happen again for us, so we'll retire 1-0 internationally."

Even low key coach Bill Belichick was pleased with the experience:

"It's a great way to end this week. It's been an enjoyable couple days here and glad we could end it on a positive note."

And even in Europe, Bucs' first year coach Raheem Morris continued to sound like a man in over his head as he made his weekly excuse filled post game comments:

"Tom, he's the guy that changed the game. He's the guy you worry about constantly. When you have a great quarterback like that, that's what he does and that's what he will do for you."

The Bucs have now lost 11 straight games, their longest losing streak since a NFL record 26 game losing run in 1976-77. Welsh boxer Joe Calzaghe served as honorary captain of Tampa Bay, and they could have done worse than to put a real fighter in the lineup on this day. As Brady noted, New England will have a bye next week as will Tampa Bay.

Colts Hammer Woeful Rams

Peyton Manning was unable to tie a NFL record with his sixth straight 300 yard game , but the Indianapolis Colts remained undefeated by ripping the lowly St. Louis Rams 42-6 at the Edward Jones Dome on Sunday. Manning amassed 235 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions as the Colts made short work of the winless Rams. The Colts are now 6-0 on the NFL season, while the Rams are 0-7.

NFL betting devotees who backed Indy as -14 road favorites easily won their bets as the Colts improved to 5-1 against the spread. After dropping their first game of the year to the number, Indy has run off five straight pointspread covers. The Chiefs dropped to 2-5 against the spread with the setback.

After the game, Colts' coach Jim Caldwell praised his quarterback:

"He functions pretty well within the system. He does a great job leading our team and being a field general. I don't think he reached 300 yards, but nevertheless he was very effective."

As has become his form, Manning deflected the praise onto his offensive line:

"I really appreciate the protection I've been getting. It's something I don't take for granted."

Indianapolis tight end Dallas Clark gave kudos to the Indy fans that made the trip to St. Louis to support the team:

"We had a great following today. It was outstanding. When we were introduced it felt like a home game."

Rams' running back Steven Jackson sounded like a man out of answers:

"We have to learn to put four good quarters together. We don't know how to win a game right now."

The Colts will return home next Sunday to face a potentially tricky game against the San Francisco 49ers. They'll remain at home for the following two games, hosting the Houston Texans the following week and the New England Patriots on November 15th. St. Louis will take on another one of the NFL's bottom feeders next Sunday, playing on the road against the Detroit Lions. The game is currently off the board while the Lions' quarterback injuries get sorted out. The Rams will have a much needed bye week after that before returning to action on November 15th as they host the New Orleans Saints.

Why are Roller Coasters Called Roller Coasters?

Nobody knows for certain where the name "roller coaster" came from, but some people believe it came from an early American design where the slides were fitted with rollers over which a flat sled would coast. Of course, roller coasters eventually changed their design to where the wheels were fitted onto the vehicle rather than the ramp. This design would be similar to the roller conveyor ramps used for moving boxes in shipping warehouses.

There is an anecdote that the name "roller coaster" originated from a roller skating rink in Haverhill Massachusetts in the late 1880s. The two men who invented the ride, Stephen E. Jackman and Byron B. Floyd say that they were first to use the term "roller coaster," and there is some evidence to back this account up.At this rink was a ride with a toboggan style sled raised to the top of a track that consisted of hundreds of rollers (like the roller conveyor ramps mentioned above). This so-called Roller Toboggan would roll down gentle hills to the floor.

Regardless of the origin of the name, "roller coaster" is a very apt description of the ride. Except for the chain that moves the roller coaster train to the top of the first (largest) hill, the cars only move using their own kinetic energy, with no mechanical or fuel-powered help at all. Perhaps the fact that the name was descriptive even after the switch from wheeled ramps to wheeled cars made it easy for the old term to "stick.?

The first roller coasters were often referred to as switchback gravity railroads, after the gravity powered railroads that were used to transfer coal down from high mountain coal seams. The very first roller coaster in the US was built as a switchback railway at Coney Island by La Marcus Thompson. It travelled along at 6 mph, and made a beautiful tour of the beach at Coney Island.

Whether the moniker ?roller coaster" originated from amusement rides based on roller ramps and sleds or early gravity powered railroads, we will never know.
