Dustin Nippert stated his basis for retaining the No. five place in the Texas Rangers' starting pitching rotation in the team's 5.0-two victory on top of the Blue Jays in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader. Next to pitch, Brandon McCarthy, making his 1st appearance since leaving the rotation in June for the DL.
Nippert showed much improved finesse than in his prior outing last week against the Yankees. In the Bronx, he surrendered 11 base runners (four hits, 7 walks) and was only responsible for eleven outs. On Tuesday afternoon, he pitched out of trouble to secure his fifth victory of the season and third as a starter. Nippert allowed five hits, walked only one. He reduced his earned run average as a starter to 4.43 and on the whole to 3.91. It was Nippert's third respectable start in his last five games.
Nippert insisted there seriously was not a lot variation concerning how he threw last week and on Tuesday: "Truly able to throw strikes. In Yankee Stadium, I suppose I pitched one curve for a strike. The larger hole I put myself in, I tried more to get beyond it. I was truly going the wrong way. I continued walking men, trying to create that just right pitch.
"Today, I was able to throw it in front in the count, behind in the count. Keep the players off my fastball."
Claimed skipper Ron Washington: "I do not suppose he was overthrowing. He was equalizing with his change-up and his moving stuff. Increased the speed of his fastball."
Washington and Nippert both indicated Nippert was not playing to guard his position in the pitching rotation. And Nippert said he'll happily start or come in from the bullpen. Since the Rangers are in playoff pursuit, each teammate's role increases in significance.
"I absolutely would like to help out this franchise," he said. "It's pleasant for us that we maintain further arms presently. Whoever's playing good baseball you may go with.
