Accept Everything That Comes With Having A Horse

By Andre Hansen

When we take on the responsibility of an animal, we want to not only take on the care of the animal; we need to take on everything that comes with having an animal. You need to ensure that the pony gets exercise too. Part of giving the horse exercise is riding him. You must keep the equipment ready for riding.

Owning a pony doesn't suggest just making sure that the pony if fed, watered and clean. Part of giving the pony exercise is riding him.

The saddle is a complex design. There are lots of parts to western saddles. It's better to be safe than regretful later. The gullet is a part of the saddle that if not properly measured, it will cause issues for the pony. If it is too short then it'll rub the horse's withers. If it is too wide, it'll sit on the pony's shoulders. The withers on a pony are the area at the third through the eleventh thoracic vertebrae.

The gullet isn't the only part of western saddle that may cause issues. If the cinches are not looked after they can cause lots of issues. If the cinches are not sorted, not only is it able to rub the pony, but it could cause an accident. This accident can hurt you, the horse or both of you.

The cinches coming loose or breaking could cause the rigging to come loose. You try to correct and regain your balance. You throw the pony off balance as you were in one spot and now you are in a different spot. Depending on the terrain where you are riding and the personality of your horse, you'll just fall off.

However, you could be in a scenario where the pony gets spooked and you lose control of the situation pretty quickly. This may be tragic for you and your pony. At best you can be injured enough that it causes you to be paralyzed; at worst you die. Your pony can become injured enough that he either dies instantly or will have to be put down because he will not be able to heal. All of this can be evaded by looking after the saddle and its parts.
