Pedometer Types

By Henry Calhoun

As people have begun to exercise more pedometers have become a very popular gadget. For those not familiar with a pedometer it is simply a tiny gadget whose primary function is to track how far a person walks in any given period of time.

Only the size of a credit card or pager, a pedometer is capable of doing many functions such as keeping track of the distance a person walks. The pedometer can even convert steps into miles, count steps and even tell you how many calories have been burnt off. If you have a more advanced pedometer you will be able to track your progress and it will store data for days or weeks.

The pedometer can even serve you as a motivator by letting you be able to see how much further you have walked or steps taken thus giving you incentive to do more each day. For those who wear the gadget on their body you are always looking for other ways to add to their daily total steps. For example taking the stairs rather than ride the elevator or a walk around the block, after dinner, all add to your daily steps.

Which pedometer you choose be sure it is one to suit your needs or what it is you require it to do. Do you want to convert steps to miles or how many steps you have taken. Perhaps it is how many calories you burnt taking all those steps or all of the above. Another thing to keep in mind is that being expensive does not necessarily mean better.

Once you have purchased a pedometer you and it will need to get used to each other to give the most accurate reading. It may take some practice but you need to find which part of your body it is best to wear it on. It will need to know how long your stride is and the pace in which you walk.

Before you start your exercise regimen the first thing you must do is to consult with your doctor, especially if it has been any length of time since you last exercised. Once you have done that and are now equipped with your new pedometer you need to start out slowly with maybe a few steps or certain distance daily and proceed to do more, as a challenge.

Fortunately, there are many great ways to increase the number of steps taken while wearing a pedometer. When parking, just park further from the entrance than you normally would or during a lunch break walk around the office building. Those are just a couple of examples. One of the best tips is to just take the stairs instead of the elevator whenever you can. If you think about it a bit, you will most likely come up with many more ways of increasing the number of steps taken.

Walking is an inexpensive way to exercise every day. All you need to do is put on a pair of comfortable sneakers, clip your pedometer to your waist or shoe, and start moving. Pedometers though small and inexpensive can be your motivation while you are walking and help you reach your fitness goals. What are you waiting for? Go purchase a pedometer and getting walking today, you'll be so glad you did.
