St. Pierre vs. Silva: Potential Reality or a Dream?

By Bruce Levins

A super fight is characterized as a fight between two of the best fighters in the world at that moment. Over the years MMA has seen Superfights between Dan Henderson and Wanderlei Silva, Bj Penn and Georges St-Pierre and Dan Henderson and Anderson Silva to name three. We all salivate every time a Superfight is brought up and why wouldn't we? Two of the best fighters battling it out to see whose better. That's just good television.

Looking at the current state of the UFC, middleweight and welterweight champs Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre have both defeated all of their recent competition with relative ease, leaving many fans to ponder how they can do something interesting from here.

Next on the list of St. Pierre's opponents will be the winner of Martin Kampman and Mike Swick at the UFC 103 event. After seeing the way St. Pierre destroyed a tougher opponent in Thiago Alves, it's hard to believe that either Kampman or Swick will have a shot at beating St. Pierre, leaving many wondering where he'll go from there.

The same goes for Anderson Silva. After he easily beat Forrest Griffin last week, many were wondered what was next on Silva's list of things to do. Griffin was considered the toughest opponent in Silva's class (even a former light heavyweight champ at that) and Silva beat him with no problem.

Silva will await Dan Henderson for his next fight, according to the UFC. Henderson is coming off a nice win against Michael Bisbing, which in and of itself got him another shot against Silva. Still, many are discounting Henderson's chances and predict an easy win for Silva. And where does Silva go from there?

Well at UFC 101 Anderson Silva more then proved he belongs amongst the elite in the light heavyweight division. Regardless of this Silva has stated that he refuses to fight the current light heavyweight champion, Lyoto Machida. Reason being, Anderson and Lyoto are good friends and former training partners. This being said unless Machida loses in an upcoming bout, fat chance, we won't be seeing Silva back at the light heavyweight division. Why not? Dana White and company won't be dumb enough to keep letting Silva decimate the contenders at 205 and never fight for the belt.

At this point, it looks like both St. Pierre and Anderson are at their peaks, with no one posing any kind of threat to the two. Interest may wane due to the lack of competitiveness in their fights, so why not put the two against each other?

Sizing the other up, knowing full well that the other is considered just as good as themselves. The two would implement totally different strategies against one another, both of which are masters at knowing what to do to win. A fight between these two at 185 would make history and isn't that what the UFC is always looking to do?
