Top Options for Ski Resort Restaurants

By Robin Rutecki

The ski vacation has changed substantially from the no frills experience common in the 70s and 1980s. The resorts across Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah have been upgrading their facilities to craft the perfect ski vacation experience.

The previous 10 years has brought continual expansion to western ski resorts. They have expanded their size, quality, and breadth of services. Deer Valley Resort in Park City, UT and Vail Resort in Vail, CO have risen to the top of the ski resort ranks. Deer Valley Resort has been ranked the #1 Ski Resort in North America by the readers of Ski Magazine in 2009, 2008, 2007, 2005, and 2001. Vail Resort held the honor in 2006, 2003, 2002, and 2000.

To earn the #1 place Deer Valley has focused not only on the quality of its skiing, but also on mountain services and the Deer Valley restaurant experience. Deer Valley Resort does not just serve skiers lunch during the day. At night they convert their day lodges into upscale restaurants which are easily some of the best restaurants in Deer Valley and Park City UT.

Selections at Deer Valleys 3 fine dining restaurants include European and continental fare at Mariposa, fresh seafood at the Seafood Buffet, and Swiss selections at Fireside Dining. Mariposa consistently receives top ratings with the Fireside Dining and Seafood Buffet not far behind.

Park City UT has also improved its service level by increasing the number of high end accommodations and by adding many great restaurants. The traditional ski vacation lodging options have been displaced because of the demands of the modern vacationer.

Because of the recent transition towards a more distinguished palate, area restaurants have responded by introducing a rich dining experience worthy of top honors. Distinguished rating agencies such as the Mobile Travel Guide, Zagat Restaurant Guide, and Michelin Travel Guide have awarded Deer Valley area restaurants with their best rankings.

The Goldener Hirsch restaurant located in the renowned Goldener Hirsch Inn and the Glitretind restaurant located in the Stein Eriksen Lodge are two such restaurants. My personal favorite is the Goldener Hirsch Restaurant because of the delicious cheese fondue appetizer and the quaint Austrian decor.

Living up to its number 1 ski resort reputation, Deer Valley Resort certainly will not disappoint. No matter what your personal preference you will definitely be able to find something to your liking both on and off the mountain. Deer Valley Resort is definitely worth a closer examination. Two thumbs up!
